Framing Public Life. The Portico in Roman Gaul, 2009, 487 p. -

This volume examines the urban development of Roman Gaul. More specifically, it focuses on the architectural form of the portico – the post-and-lintel or the arcuated colonnade – as it was implemented, modified, and experienced in the three regions of Gaul known as Narbonensis, Aquitania and Lugdunensis. The project unfolds in two parts. First it assembles a catalogue of Gallic porticoes with entries that include specific description of each site, its excavation and state of preservation, and its surrounding topography. The catalogue also contains lists of materials, decorative elements, on-site finds and epigraphic accessories. The author produced an interpretive analysis of the findings, arranged topically, with the intention of defining patterns of spatial arrangement, ornamentation and institutional use of the portico in Gaul. These topics inform the chapters, wich also take into consideration chronological development, topographical situations, and decorative and material components.
