ÉPUISÉ - La ceramografia protoattica. Pittori e botteghe (710-630 a.C.), 2008, 268 p., 32 ill. -

Ouvrage en italien. This study deals with all of Protoattic vase painting from the late 8th century to around 630 / 625 B.C. It focuses on attributions to painter personalities and workshops, vessel types, figurative and ornamental subjects and their change in the course of time. The earliest production phase was characterized by a small number of workshops dominated by a few painters. Two different workshop traditions can be recognized [Analatos Painter / Mesoghaia Painter and Vulture Painter]. Between 710 and 680 close contacts with the Cyclades existed and included migrant craftsmen and artists. Around 690 / 680 the influence of Late Geometric heritage ended. The period of 680-640 / 630 is characterized by great diversity. Unlike in Protocorinthian vase painting, no standardization of types occurred. However, some workshops specialized in particular picture themes, e.g. of a ceremonial or heroic character. With the adoption of the black figure style around 630 / 625 new subjects were introduced. With regard to inscriptions, both inscriptions identifying figures on vases and inscriptions of dedication may be found. Only a minor part of the pottery was exported.
