In the 150 years following the Carolingian conquest the Anglo-Saxons made giant strides to become eventual rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. A historian introduces the topic, evaluating the reliabiblity of the sources. Archaeologists then describes the living conditions, especially along the coast where villages have been excavated, and social customs revealed by grave-goods. The birth of urban communities, stimulated by monastic settlements and trade, is followed through archaeological evidence. Also discussed are Saxon political relations prior to and during the Carolingian conquest.
