Tell Karanovo gehört zu den wichtigsten vorgeschichtlichen Siedlungen in Südosteuropa. Von den 1947 – 1957 durchgeführten Ausgrabungen wurden nur wenige Funde publiziert. Die seit 1984 laufenden österreichisch-bulgarischen Ausgrabungen haben das Ziel, ein detailliertes Bild der Stratigraphie und des Fundmaterials zu vermitteln. Im ersten Band dieses neuen Grabungszyklus werden die Ergebnisse der Grabungen von 1984 – 1992 vorgelegt, welche die neolithischen Kulturschichten, insbesondere das Frühneolithikum (Karanovo I, II) betreffen. Dazu kommt das Fundmaterial aus umfangreichen chalkolithischen und frühbronzezeitlichen Abfallgruben. Karanovo is known as one of the most outstanding prehistoric sites in South-Eastern Europe. Unfortunately only few pieces of the material found during earlier excavations from 1947 – 1957 were published. New archeological research is conducted since 1984 by a joint Bulgarian-Austrian team led by the intention to provide a more detailed picture of the stratigraphy and small finds. In the first volume on this recent excavations the results of the work done between 1984 and 1992 are published. These concern mainly levels from the Neolithic, in particular the Early Neolithic period (Karanovo I and II); but also rich material coming from Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age pits is included.
