The archaeology of cult and religion, 2001, 288 p. -
The proposed volume presents a unique body of never-before collected scholarship focusing on cult and religion in archaeology. To our knowledge, it is the first such volume to exist and to take as its primary theme the study of religion through archaeology. The contributors come from diverse backgrounds and are each highly specialized. Together, they form a well-balanced team that cover issues across Europe with a temporal focus on pre- and protohistory. As such, the volume will serve both as a reference text for those archaeologists already pursuing similar studies and also as an introduction to religious studies for archaeologists who have not yet explored the topic. The book will also serve as a text for use in lecture courses and seminars, and in doing so will provide a cutting-edge perspective on archaeologies of religion, cult, ritual, representation, imagery, structured space, mortuary practices and material culture studies. The volume's diversity will make it appropriate for use in all three major archaeological schools in Europe and the US - the culture-historical, the processual and the post-processual. It will also provide a way to link archaeology to the growing interdisciplinary fields of religion and cult studies.
