This substantial bilingual English / French and French / English dictionary is intended to facilitate the understanding of specialized terminology in foreign-language texts on prehistoric archaeology of Europe and North America. Each language pair in this first edition contains more than 10,000 entries and cross references. The entries of the dictionary cover the prehistory of North America and the prehistory of Europe from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. Emphasis has been placed on general archaeological terms, on descriptive terms as well as on the main artefact types, with special attention given to the topics and terms of agriculture, anthropology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, geography, geology, graves and burial customs, housing, lithics, metallurgy, methodology, pottery, skeletal parts, small finds, textiles, tools, and weapons. Five appendices at the end of the volume also give the scientific terms for the each of the main skeletal parts and for both the wild and the domesticated animal and plant species commonly found in excavations on European and North American archaeological sites.
