The Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Castledyke South, Barton-on-Humber, (Sheffield Excavation Reports series, 6),1997, 391 p., rel. -
The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Castledyke South, Barton-on Humber, which dates from the early 6th to the late 7th centuries, was discovered through the disturbance of 5 graves in 1939. Fieldwork in 1975-90 accomplished the partial excavation of the cemetery, identifying a further 196 graves and the skeletal remains of 227 individuals. These provided a sample of an estimated total population of over 400, representing a community of 40-60 souls. Castledyke is the first inhumation cemetery in the 'Kingdom of Lindsey' to be comprehensively reported to modern standards. This cemetery is unusual for the long duration and intensity of its use. The diversity of mortuary practice may in part be ascribed to these factors, to the estuarine location of the site, and perhaps to a more mixed population than has been encountered in other regions.
