This three-volume, illustrated reference work addresses students, professional scholars, and an informed general readership. It is international in its scope and covers prehistoric to contemporary sculpture. The book contains some 600 alphabetically-arranged entries : national and stylistic surveys; biographies and works entries; studies of materials and techniques; and topics such as the conservation of sculpture. It explores the subject of sculpture from the viewpoint of history, criticism, theory, production, training, and conservation, as well as looking at individual artists and their works. The extensive country surveys treat sculpture from a regional aspect, which is especially appropriate where individual sculptors are unidentifiable or where a style is associated with a whole region or school.
