Early Celtic Art in the British Isles, 2 vol., 2000, 395 p. de texte + 332 p. de pl., rel. -
The task that Jacobstahl bequeathed to E.M. Jope is now finally complete and brought to press. It is a masterly and comprehensive analysis of the development of Celtic design from the 4th c. BC to the start of the Romanisation of Britain in the 1st c. AD. The author traces the emergence of Britain's unique insular art through a wide variety of objects, especially swords, scabbards and brooches, personal ornaments and horse equipment and explores further developments through the decoration of ceremonial armour and shields. He discusses the use of human, animal and plant imagery; and throughout objects are compared and contrasted with artefacts from the Celtic Continent.
